A Short History of Muckadilla
In 1889, the Queensland Government put down a test bore at Muckadilla. The supply was comparatively small but it discovered that the water contained healing powers and tourists flocked to the town looking for a cure. Today the bore provides the township's water supply.
Muckadilla Hotel Motel provides counter meals, bed and breakfast for tourists and a small swimming pool in a tranquil setting.
The Whistle Stop is located in the park at Muckadilla. It provides information and refreshments to tourists as well as a point of sale for local arts and crafts. The building was the original railway station at Muckadilla and has recently been relocated to this site. Public toilets and picnic tables are adjacent to the Whistle Stop.
Muckadilla is predominantly a grain producing area and has its own grain depot. The town also has a small primary school.
The district of Muckadilla hosts the Annual May Day Shoot of the Western District Rifle Association.
Muckadilla War Memorial When you stand in front of the Muckadilla war memorial beside the Warrego Highway you can have no doubt as where you are. Arrows at the base point east to Roma and west to Mitchell. You are half way between them.
The black granite obelisk was erected to the memory of those who gave their to-day for our to-morrow in World War II, and names Gunner H A Arthur and Gunner G D K Newbon. It stands on a solid black granite base and is surrounded by eight concrete piers connected by piping.
A flagpole is positioned beside the memorial. The arrows on the base of the war memorial are very useful to point visitors in the right direction after they use the mud and hot springs for which Muckadilla is well known.
No other Queensland war memorial carries its own direction signs, so don't drive straight past, but stop and see them for yourself. Pause and remember the many thousands of young men and women from right across Australia who gave their to-day for our to-morrow in the many conflicts in which Australia has been involved over the years.
